H+ excretion in the marine teleost Parophrys vetulus.

چکیده
This study examined the branchial, renal and blood acid-base responses of a marine teleost to intravascular infusion of mineral acid (HCl at 1000 mu-equiv/kg). In all animals the renal response was insignificant for at least 3 days following infusion. Two types of branchial and blood acid-base response were seen. Either the infused load disappeared rapidly from the extracellular into the intracellular compartment and was slowly cleared from the body (+ 16 h following infusion) or, more commonly, remained in the extracellular compartment until rapidly cleared by a pronounced increase in branchial excretion. In the latter the amount excreted exceeded that infused by about twofold on average. These responses are discussed in relation to those of freshwater teleosts.

The effects of silver on intestinal ion and acid-base regulation in the marine teleost fish, Parophrys vetulus.
Exposure to elevated silver (as AgNO3) concentrations (6-9 microM) in seawater was associated with comparably high silver concentrations in the intestinal fluids of the lemon sole (Parophrys vetulus), and a tendency for reduced drinking rate. The effects of silver on intestinal ion and acid-base regulation were studied using in situ perfusion of the intestine. Intestinal net Cl- uptake was redu...

Exposure to elevated waterborne silver as AgNO 3 (4.07 lM=448 lg l ±1) in seawater resulted in osmoregulatory disturbance in the lemon sole (Paroph-rys vetulus). The main eects were increased plasma Na + and Cl ± concentrations which translated into increased plasma osmolality. Plasma Mg 2+ levels were also slightly increased after 96 h exposure. Using radio-isotopic ¯ux measurements, a 50% re...
متن کاملLycalopex vetulus (Carnivora: Canidae)
Lycalopex vetulus (Lund, 1842), commonly called the hoary fox, is Brazil’s smallest canid. It has a slender body and limbs and a small skull composed of relative fragile bones. Its size and skull characteristics combined with its peculiar dentition make it more suitable for an insectivorous diet rather than one of large vertebrates. L. vetulus is endemic to Brazil and occurs primarily in the so...
متن کاملConsistent associations between hepatic lesions in English sole (Parophrys vetulus) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in bottom sediment.
A consistent and statistically significant association between prevalence of hepatic neoplasms in free-living sole (Parophrys vetulus) and levels of anthropogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in bottom sediment from sites of fish capture was documented in a series of studies conducted over a period of 7 years in Puget Sound, Washington. This result strengthens the evidence supporting a caus...
متن کاملRelationships between hepatic neoplasms and related lesions and exposure to toxic chemicals in marine fish from the U.S. West Coast.
English sole (Parophrys vetulus) inhabiting polluted waterways and embayments of Puget Sound, Washington, are affected with a variety of multiple, co-occurring idiopathic hepatic lesions, including unique degenerative conditions, putatively preneoplastic foci of cellular alteration, and neoplasms. Results of a statistical analysis of the patterns of co-occurrence of these lesions in wild Englis...
